Square measures approximately 6 inches.

The following pattern is my original design.
Please only copy or print this pattern for personal use.

MATERIALS:

Hook: Size G, (4.25 mm) (#6)
4 Ply Cotton Yarn in White, Red & Blue (Acrylic yarn would work fine)

Stitches used: ch, sl st, sc, hdc, dc.

Difficulty: MEDIUM/DIFFICULT


BASE SQUARE

Rnd 1: Ch 4, join to form a ring. Ch 2, 11 hdc in ring. Join with sl st in top of beg ch-2. Ch 2, turn.
Rnd 2: Hdc in same st as beg ch-2. 2hdc in each rem hdc. Join with sl st in top of beg ch-2. Ch 3, turn.
Rnd 3: (dc, ch 1, 2dc) in same sp as beg ch-3. * [ch 1, sk next 2 sts, hdc in next st, ch 1, sk next 2 sts.] (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in next st. Rep from * once. Rep from [ to ] once. Join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. Turn.
Rnd 4: Sl st in next ch-1 sp. Ch 3, dc in same sp, sk next hdc, 2dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 2 dc, (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in corner ch-1 sp. * dc in next 2dc, 2dc in next ch-1 sp, sk next hdc, 2dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next 2dc, (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in corner ch-1 sp. Rep from * twice. Dc in last 2dc. Join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. Do not turn.
Rnd 5: Sl st in next dc, ch 3, dc in dc to right of beg ch 3. * sk next unworked dc, dc in next dc, dc in skipped dc. Rep from * twice.
[corner] (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in corner ch-1 sp.
[* sk next unworked dc, dc in next dc, dc in skipped dc. * Rep from * to * across to corner. (2dc, ch 1, 2dc) in corner ch-1 sp.]
Rep [ to ] twice more. Rep from * to * twice more. Join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. Ch 2. Do not turn.
Rnd 6: Hdc in ea st along sides. (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in ea corner. Join with sl st.

Red Burst
Join red on Rnd 2 in a st to the left of one of the hdc stitches. Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next st.

Ch 4, sc in center of corner on Rnd 4 (between sts on Rnd 5) Ch 4, sc in next 2 unworked sts.

[begin side point]

Ch 3, sc in center sp of Rnd 4, ch 3, sc in next 2 sts of Rnd 2.
[side point made]

Rep corner points and side points around entire square. Join with sl st to first st and fasten off.

Blue Center Circle
Working between Rnds 1 & 2, sc in any sp, * ch 3, sc in next sp. Rep from * around.
Join with a sl st and fasten off.

Weave in ends.

For afghan assembly alternate the base square with the fireworks square as shown in the sample layout below. You can use as many or as few squares as you want to make a range of different size afghans and use the joining method of your choice.
