QUESTIONS FROM
THE CNM MESSAGE BOARD

Post your crochet question on The Crochet 'N' More Message Board and you might see it here!

QUESTION:

RE: Dr. Seuss type patterns

My son and daughter in law are expecting in February and are doing the nursery in Dr. Seuss I recently bought a Cat in the Hat stuffed toy pattern on line, but would love to have more - either graphs or stuffed toys or wall hangings, anything, either free or to buy doesn't matter as this is so hard to find but will make an adorable nursery I think! Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. :)

Jamie

ANSWER:

A Dr. Seuss nursery will be beautiful.

I haven't been able to locate any patterns to crochet any Dr. Seuss character items.
There are a few cross stitch patterns available which could be used in a crochet project:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/53941442/cat-in-the-hat-counted-cross-stitch

There's a cute birth sampler cross stitch pattern available here:
http://xsttch.ecrater.com/p/3623263/dr-seuss-birth-sampler

I found a resource for fabric and quilt kits:
http://www.fatquartershop.com/Dr-Seuss-Fabric-Robert-Kaufman-Fabrics.asp?Store_Id=499&Shopper_id=29482995517294

Wall letters to spell the baby's name would be a good idea:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/29703604/dr-seuss-the-cat-in-the-hat-hand-painted

I believe these could me made by purchasing wooden letters and gluing images onto them. Here are a couple of pages with pictures of nursery ideas:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/24756958/custom-nursery-crib-set-includes-blanket

If the walls are paintable you could use a projector and paint the characters you like on the walls.

Also, framed photos of characters would be decorative:
http://unique-baby-gear-ideas.blogspot.com/2008/12/dr-seuss-plaques.html

Some of the items linked to have already been sold but I sent them to you anyway so you could get some great ideas.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

"The only time we should look back to yesterday
is to look at the positive things that were accomplished
to encourage us to do better things today and tomorrow."
Stevie Wonder

How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit! When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Thy hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. I acknowledged my sin to Thee and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the Lord;" and Thou didst forgive the guilt of my sin.

Psalm 32:1-5

And when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners, in order to be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you. And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition, as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need, before you ask Him. Pray, then, this way:

Our Father who are in heaven. Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. They will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And to not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

For if you forgive men for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Matthew 6:5-15

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplicaiton with thansgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Philippians 4:6

"GOD IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE
TO HEAR THE PRAYER OF HIS CHILD."

"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst."
Matthew 18:20

CROCHET STITCH or TECHNIQUE

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

INCOMPLETE DOUBLE CROCHET

An Incomplete Double Crochet is a normal double crochet stitch worked without completing the very last step.
Here's how:

Yarn over and insert your hook into the stitch or space indicated.
Yarn over and pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook.)
Yarn over and draw through 2 of the loops. (2 loops on hook.)

Anytime a stitch is listed as "incomplete" work the stitch as usual but omit the
very last step.

This Viewer Stitch Idea, Courtesy of Lynne.
I was wondering if you know what an incomplete double crochet is and how do I do this stitch. I'd appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks and have a great day.
Sincerely, Lynne

CROCHET TIP

I wind leftover yarn into balls and store it in plastic stacking drawers.
I store cotton yarn in one drawer; acrylic in another drawer and other yarn fibers in another drawer. This makes it easier to locate the colors and types of yarn I need because they are organized in the same place.

Scrap Yarn Ideas ...

do you have number 84?

76. I crochet balls the size of baseballs and stuff lightly for my grandchildren to play with in the house. They really like bright colors. Purple is the favorite so far.
Rebecca Logan

77. I don't always have the plastic eyes on hand when I'm crocheting a new stuffed animal for my grandchildren so I dip into my scrap yarn pieces and embroider eyes. I can make them any color I choose.
Rebecca Logan

78. I'm not sure how to do it but crocheting a small piece to wrap around the part of your eyeglasses that lies on the bridge of your nose seems like a good idea if your glasses like to slide down.
Rebecca Logan

79. Instead of wearing a chain on your eyeglasses, why not crochet a chain.
Rebecca Logan

80. Crochet 2 chains of yarn (8" - 10" long) and attatch one to each end of your eyeglasses and then tie the ends together in the back of your head in a bow. This could be done in different colors to match your outfit, or your school colors, or in holiday colors such as green for St. Patricks Day, pink and red for Valentines Day....etc. I haven't tried it because I just thought of it. Let your imagination run free!
Rebecca Logan

81. Give you're scrap yarn to someone who loves to crochet but can hardly ever afford new yarn. And maybe just give them some new yarn and keep the old for yourself.
Rebecca Logan

82. Swap some of your scrap yarn with a friend who needs the color of yarn you have. Your friend just might have the color of yarn you need.
Rebecca Logan

83. I don't think I saw where anyone was making flowers. Even a tiny bit of yarn would make a forget me not. These could be put on almost anything. A lap afghan would be awesome for a rest home. I'm going to make pansies for my next package. Thank you for your web sight. I found all the ideas awesome. love Anna

Re: Filet Alphabet Patterns

I am looking for a pattern and hope you can help.
I need a 7 inch square with worsted weight yarn and I hook.
I was hoping to find an easy one for a simple filet B pattern.
Do you know of anything like that?
Thank you! Christa

The following page contains a filet pattern for the letter "B" along with links to the rest of the alphabet.
http://crochet.about.com/library/blcheckb.htm

Hope you can use this pattern.
I don't think it will workout to the size you wanted if you use worsted weight yarn though.

You might be able to use my pattern for a Row Count "B" Coaster and work extra edging rounds to achieve the size you want:
http://www.crochetnmore.com/rowcountbcoaster.htm

I just found your website yesterday and am having a lot of fun exploring. It is easy to get around on your site. I know I will come back often. Jan

Hello, I've done some crocheting and i'm having problems understanding your pattern.. Please, help.what does fasten off mean and with the heel 1: With RS facing, working in bl's only. Reattach yarn in the center stitch on RS of sole. I know that Rs is right side but not sure about bl, and this is the heel also..R5: Ch1, turn. Sc in 1st st. (Ch1, sk next sc, sc in next sc) around. I'm not sure what sk means.. if you could please help i would be grateful..Tammie

<< reply >>

what does fasten off mean and with the heel 1: With RS facing, working in bl's only. Reattach yarn in the center stitch on RS of sole. I know that Rs is right side but not sure about bl,

BL is the abbreviation for back loop. To begin the heel, you reattach the yarn 7 stitches back from the original fasten off point. Then you work in the back loops only... making single crochet stitches around to the same point on the opposite side of the bootie. You should have 19 singles when finished with Row 1.

and this is the heel also.. R5: Ch1, turn. Sc in 1st st. (Ch1, sk next sc, sc in next sc) around. I'm not sure what sk means.

Sk is the abbreviation for skip.

For round 5 you do the following:

Chain 4 and turn.
Now, Slip stitch in the same stitch.
Chain 3.
Now, Slip stitch in the stitch on other end of same round.
(this forms a little hole on the top of the toe).
Chain 4, slip stitch in the same stitch.

When you finish you should have two little loops,
one on each side of the toe where the tie string will go.

Subject: Emma's_Baby_Booties

Hi there. Do you have a trick to increase the size? i.e. for a 4 inch foot? Thanks!
Monique Holm

<< reply >>

I've never tried to make this pattern larger but it would be fairly easy to increase the sole size... if you need it wider... begin with more chains and then to increase the length repeat Row 3 for more than Rows 4-11.

The rest of the pattern would be trickier. You will have to calculate how many stitches you have for the size sole you decide on and rework the rest of the pattern from there.

Subject: Emma's_Baby_Booties

I would love to try to make these for my friends new baby... are you willing to send the pattern? thank you Anja

<< reply >>

The pattern for Emma's Baby Booties is on this page: http://www.crochetnmore.com/emmasbabybooties.htm
free of charge. You can print it using your browser.

Re: mission work

Hi Lisa,

My name is Anna Jarrett and I live in Soldotna Alaska. I would like to share with you how God is going to use your web sight in our mission work here.

My husband and I work for Samaritan's Purse , (Franklin Graham). We have an office here with airplanes that we use in Alaska and Far East Russia. We have a staff of seven families.

Much of our work is building churches and youth centers in bush Alaska. The only way there is by air. It has been such rewarding work , meeting the needs of the pastors and their wives . There is so much to share on how hard it is but I will save that for another time.

In the last few years I have found that in the villages there are many pastors wives who crochet. The ladies at SP see the opportunity to use this as a ministry . Sending supplies so they can teach the other young girls. As they share the love of crochet, we pray they will see the love of God in that home and want that in their own lives. So one of our mission projects is to collect donated yarn and other supplies so these ladies will be able give these things away. So far God had provided everything we have ask him for.

Your web sight is going to be such a blessing to all of us. The winters are long and dark, so that is when we do most of our hand work. Supplies are very hard for them to get , books costing too much for postage. Especially when they live on very small salaries. So I am thanking God , that they can download patterns, find helpful hints and see what others are doing. Some of these villages have as few as 100 people and they are hundreds of miles away from the next village. With no roads. The only way is by air, snow machine and dog sleds.

Thank you again for your web sight. Isn't it awesome that God uses our talents to bless others? Doing something we really love. I would love to send you pictures and updates. Are you going to put your web sight on Face book.? That would be helpful to so many of the ladies here. God Bless, In him Anna Jarrett

<< reply >>

Our family is familiar with Samaritan's Purse... it is a wonderful organization.

I'm so glad that the information on the Crochet N More website is useful to you and your ministry. God is wonderful to give people talents through which they may help others. I would love to see photos and updates!

Crochetnmore has a Facebook page now:

The Crochet N More website is currently undergoing alot of changes... hopefully these changes will make for a more pleasant web experience for our wonderful viewers.

RE: Hanging Dish Towel

I found this pattern on your web site and wanted to try it. It looks like it would really be pretty. I have just started crocheting in the last 3 or 4 months, so I am relatively new at this.

There is one part that I don't understand. Row 20 - can you please tell me what "2 dc in next ch 1 sp" means??? I don't understand the "ch 1 sp". Then later in the pattern there is a "2 dc in next ch 2 sp".

I would really appreciate your help. I think this will make a very pretty decorative wall hanging. I'm sure it will be so pretty that I will not want to use it. Thanks, Marie Hinnen

<< reply >>

Congratulations on learning the art of crochet.

Regarding Row 20 of the Hanging Dish Towel pattern:

"2dc in next ch 1 sp" means you work two double crochet stitches into the hole beneath the next chain stitch on the working row. Do not work into the chain itself.

"2dc in next ch 2 sp" means you work two double crochets in the hole beneath the
next two chains.

I want you to know that I left your site crochetnmore.com promptly because of the WSPA donation ad and the picture. It's horrible. I love animals and do what I can to help and don't like to be surprised with abuse pictures when I'm surfing the web for my hobby. You may consider getting rid of that one..or at least the picture. Thank you, Megan

<< reply >>

Thanks Megan!
I think we have that problem fixed.
I don't like surprise ads either and that one ended up in the ad rotation.
I really appreciate you taking the time to let me know.
Please email me anytime and ad or any other content is offensive to you.

Subject: ReadAPattern

What is meant when the instructions tell you to sc, hdc around last dc of a row? I have never read a pattern that tells you to go around a stitch.

<< reply >>

To work stitches "around" stitches at the end of a row you actually work around the "post" of the stitch.

Imagine that a double crochet stitch looks like a fence post... work the indicated stitches (in this case 1 sc and 1 hdc) around the post of the stitch instead of into the stitch like we normally would.

Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.

This book is a wonderful addition to any crochet library.
I've had numerous requests over the years of what to crochet for boys.
Crobots are definitely the answer!
This 96-page book is filled with numerous types of Crobot patterns as well as well-illustrated instructions for the
crochet stitches, assembly stitches and other embellishments used in the patterns.
The patterns are well written, some of the book is written in a small font but the pictures are wonderful.

NOTE: This book comes to you with a safety warning regarding the small parts used in the patterns.
Therefore, please use your own discretion as to the age of the child you intend the gift for.

I have to tell you about this new book.
SweaterBabe.com's Fabulous & Flirty Crochet
I'm so happy to have it in my crochet library.

Katherine Lee has an eye for style and a definite knack for creating beautiful crochet patterns.
I was really happy with the large colorful project photos.
There's something for everyone!
The aspect of Fabulous and Flirty Crochet that stood out to me was the section on the yarns
used in the patterns. One page shows "actual size" photos of the yarns which makes it super
easy to substitute other yarns if you want to. For those who stay strictly to the recommended
yarn in a pattern Katherine has included a yarn resource list. The projects are very fashionable
and perfect for gift giving... though I'm sure you'll have to make something for yourself :o)
I can't wait to try the Flirty Skirt and the Ruffled Strap Tank.

HUMOR

I was preparing to go cash a paycheck when I realized my husband, Mark, hadn't signed it. So I sent four-year-old Chelsea upstairs to "get Daddy's name on the back of it."

She came back, handed it to me, and said, "I knew his name so I did it myself."
On the back of the check, she had printed, "D-A-D".

It was the chicken's day off!

One Sunday morning when my son was about five years old, we were attending church in our community. It was common for the preacher to invite the children to the front of the church and have a small lesson before beginning the sermon. He would bring in an item they could find around the house and relate it to a teaching from the Bible.

This particular morning, the visual aid for his lesson was a smoke detector. He asked the children if anyone knew what it meant when an alarm sounded from the smoke detector.

My child immediately raised his hand and said, "It means Daddy's cooking dinner."

A man hated his wife's cat and he decided to get rid of it. He drove 20 blocks away from home and dropped the cat there. The cat was already walking up the driveway when he approached his home.

The next day, he decided to drop the cat 40 blocks away but the same thing happened. He kept on increasing the number of blocks but the cat kept on coming home before him. At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then left, past the bridge, then right again and another right and so on until he reached what he thought was a perfect spot and dropped the cat there.

Hours later, the man calls his wife at home and asked her, "Jen is the cat there?"

"Yes, why do you ask?" answered the wife.

Frustrated the man said, "Put that cat on the phone, I am lost and I need directions."

The judge had not yet put in an appearance in traffic court. When the bailiff entered the courtroom, he sensed the nervousness of the traffic offenders awaiting their ordeal. "Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," he said. "Welcome to 'What's My Fine?'"

An office technician got a call from a computer user. The user told the tech that her computer was not working. She described the problem, and the tech concluded that her computer needed to be brought in and serviced. He told her, "Unplug the power cord and bring it up here and I'll fix it for you."

About ten minutes later, she showed up at his door ... with only the electrical cord in her right hand.

I love the outdoors, and because of my passion for hunting and fishing, my family eats a considerable amount of wild game.

I guess they eat so much, in fact, that one evening as I set a platter of broiled venison steaks on the dinner table, my ten-year-old daughter looked up and said, "Boy, it sure would be nice if pizzas lived in the woods."

A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children fell to discussing the dog's duties.

"They use him to keep crowds back," said one youngster.

"No," said another, "he's just for good luck."

A third child brought the argument to a close.
"They use the dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrant."

My wife and I get along just great-except she's a back-seat driver second to none. On my way home from work one day, my cell phone rang as I merged onto a freeway bypass. It was my wife. By chance, she had entered the bypass right behind me.

"Honey," she said, "your turn signal is still on.
And put your lights on-it's starting to rain."

When Mary was pregnant, her five year old, Billy, was utterly amazed and a little bit disbelieving that his sister was growing in his mom's tummy. So one day when the baby was especially active, she asked Billy to place his tiny hands on her tummy to feel the baby kick. But when he did, the baby was suddenly still.

"Oh, Billy, she must have decided to take a nap," shrugged his mother.

"A nap"? Billy marveled.
"You mean there's a bed in there too"?

My mother was recently on a flight returning from Utah. As the plane was a small puddle jumper, the flight attendants were required to demonstrate the life vest, the oxygen mask, etc. instead of turning on a video.

After they finished their presentation, one of them said
"To those of you who listened, thank you.
To those of you who ignored us, good luck."

A Sunday school teacher was talking to her young pupils about how they should behave in church.

"Now," she said, "who can tell me why you should be quiet when you are sitting with your parents in church?"

One little girl put up her hand.

"Yes Jane, tell everyone why!" said the teacher.

Replied Jane, "Because people are trying to sleep!"
