GENERAL NEWS

Dear Subscriber:

Before I was a Mom ...
I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
I had never been puked on. Pooped on. Chewed on. Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put them down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important and happy.
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache,
the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much, before I was a Mom.

Happy Belated Mother's Day

to all
Mothers & Grandmothers
and to every lady who takes
an interest in the life of a child!

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

"Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens
reflect the kind of care they get."
H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. She looks for wool and flax, and works with her hands in delight. She is like merchant ships; she brings her food from afar. She arises also while it is still night, and gives food to her household, and portions to her maidens. She considers a field and buys it; from her earning she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength. And makes her arms strong. She senses that her gain is good; her lamp does not go out at night. She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hands grasp the spindle. She extends her hand to the poor; and she stretches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her houshold, for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She makes coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies belts to the tradesmen. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future. She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and bless her; her husband also, and he praises her, saying: "Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all." Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her the product of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.

Proverbs 31:10-31

Whenever a woman is in travail she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to a child, she remembers the anguish no more, for joy that a child has been born into the world.

John 16:21

Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

Exodus 20:12

"THE VIRTUES OF MOTHERS
ARE VISITED ON THEIR CHILDREN."

This quote is from Our Daily Bread - May, 2007 Issue.

"For where two or three have gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst." Matthew 18:20

it is forbidden because it is hurtful."

CROCHET STITCH or TECHNIQUE

(A different crochet stitch and/or tip featured in each issue...
to be added later to the Crochet Basics page)

BROOMSTICK LACE
No Abbreviation

Broomstick Lace is done with a large knitting needle or broomstick.
Using a crochet hook the loops are made one at a time and then placed onto the broomstick needle.
Loops are worked off of the broomstick needle by removing them in sets and crocheting into them.

Broomstick lace can be altered to suite your taste. Instead of doing 4 loops per section you might want to do 5. Use your imagination. Just remember... if you pull off 4 loops (like in the square pattern) you must do 4 stitches into those loops. If you pull off 5 loops you must do 5 stitches into the loops, etc.

CROCHET TIP

"Felting" happens when you crochet or knit an item using 100% wool yarn and then wash that item in hot water followed by a cold water rinse. The agitation "felts" the stitches together and causes the item to lose the stitch definition.

If you want to try crocheting some felted crochet patterns click the link below:
http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/felted_items.php

If you don't want your crochet projects to "felt"... do not use 100% wool yarn.

Scrap Yarn Ideas ...

32. I keep all of my scrap yarn and stuff any shape that I care to make including square boxes made from plastic canvas They make good pin cushions if you don't cut the ends of the plastic canvas closely. This way they cling to the arm of an upholstered chair. Dot Brown

33. Hi Lisa! I've been a fan of your website for about 5 years! I've got some great gift pattern ideas from your site. I have a scrap yarn idea if you need another. I am always misplacing my hair scrunchies so I use some of my scrap yarn to make the scrunchies with the pattern I found on your site. You can also make extras to give to friends! Thanks again for your site! God bless--Malena

RE: TABLE RUNNER

Hi, I was looking at your website, very interesting. As a new crocheter, I saw the table runnrer pattern you have. It said to DC in the "Hump" of the 4th Ch from the hook. What do you mean by Hump?, never saw that term before. Thanks ,I would love to try this pattern.

Jon

<< reply >>

Each chain has a top loop and a bottom loop on the front side and on the back there is a little hump. When you make the foundation chain (the chains made to begin your project) the front side of the chain will look like little hearts sitting on top of each other. When you flip the chain over to the back side it looks like a little row of humps.

RE: Your patterns ~ question

I found your site recently from Crochet Pattern Central, and I love all the patterns! I was wondering, how do you feel about people selling items they have made from your patterns? I am thinking about starting to make things to sell to help pay for wedding expenses and everything, but I don't want to sell anything unless I have been given permission by the designer. Thanks for your help! Sincerely, Naomi

<< reply >>

I don't mind any crocheter using my patterns to make items to sell for profit. All I ask is that my pattern(s) not be sold and if possible include the url to my site with the items when they are sold. Thanks!

I have to tell you about this new book.
SweaterBabe.com's Fabulous & Flirty Crochet
I'm so happy to have it in my crochet library.

Katherine Lee has an eye for style and a definite knack for creating beautiful crochet patterns.
I was really happy with the large colorful project photos.
There's something for everyone!
The aspect of Fabulous and Flirty Crochet that stood out to me was the section on the yarns used in the patterns.
One page shows "actual size" photos of the yarns which makes it super easy to substitute other yarns if you want to.
For those who stay strictly to the recommended yarn in a pattern Katherine has included a yarn resource list.
The projects are very fashionable and perfect for gift giving... though I'm sure you'll have to make something for yourself :o)
I can't wait to try the Flirty Skirt and the Ruffled Strap Tank.

HUMOR

I was accompanying my eight-year-old daughter who was selling cookies door-to-door for the Girl Scouts. After visiting several homes, she commented on the different styles of doorbells: some buzzed, some rang, some warbled. We made a game of guessing what the next bell would sound like.

At the precise moment she touched the doorbell at one house, the church tower began to chime. She wheeled around with a look of amazement on her face. "Now that's a doorbell!"

“Look at this mess!” roared an angry customer at a local cafe, pointing to his squashed doughnut.

“It’s just as you ordered it, sir,” the waitress replied meekly.
"You told me to bring you coffee and a doughnut and step on it.”

As I pulled into the parking lot at the grocery store, I noticed a car with its headlights on. I jotted down the make, color and license number. Inside the store I joined the line at the information desk, and when it was my turn, I told the clerk that there was a green Ford in the parking lot that had its lights on and gave her the license number.

"Thank you," she replied, and went on to another customer.

The gentleman next to me asked her indignantly, "Aren't you going to announce it?"

"There's no need," she replied sheepishly. "That's my car."

One evening while I was preparing dinner, my daughter came into the kitchen asking for homework help on her vocabulary words. "Mom," she asked, "what's a quarter horse?"

As I thought of a simple explanation, my five-year-old son piped up,
"It's the one they have in front of the grocery store."

Our supervisor recently made a casual comment about my shaggy mane of hair. He then went on to extol the virtues of a good haircut, which, he insisted, makes an elderly man look younger and a younger man seem more mature.

"How would a haircut make a middle-aged man like me appear?" I asked.

"Still employed," he answered.

Two boys were arguing when the teacher entered the room.
The teacher says, "Why are you arguing?"

One boy answers, "We found a ten dollor bill and decided to give it to whoever tells the biggest lie."

"You should be ashamed of yourselves," said the teacher,
"When I was your age I didn't even know what a lie was."

The boys gave the ten dollars to the teacher.

My friend's 5 year old granddaughter looked at the stars one night and exclaimed,
"God's home! All his lights are on!"

TWO BUZZARDS were flying over the desert when a jet whizzed by them, its exhaust spouting flame and smoke. As the plane sped out of sight, one buzzard said,
"That bird was really in a hurry."

"You'd be, too," said the other buzzard, "if your tail was on fire."

A STUDENT was on his way to school but was running short on time. So he stopped at a farmhouse and knocked on the door. "Could I cut across your field so I can catch the 8:30 bus?" he asked.

"Go right ahead," the farmer said. "And if my bull sees you, you'll be able to catch the 8 o'clock bus!"

When we moved cross-country, my wife and I decided to drive both of our cars.
Nathan, our eight-year-old, worriedly asked, "How will we keep from getting separated?"

"We'll drive slowly so that one car can follow the other," I reassured him.

"Yeah, but what if we DO get separated?" he persisted.

"Well, then I guess we'll never see each other again," I quipped.

"Okay," he said. "I'm riding with Mom."

My new girlfriend, Karen, got a job at a local hardware store. "The owner doesn't want us hanging out with our friends," she said. "If you stop by, tell them you're my brother."

On my first visit, I walked to the customer service desk and asked the older woman there, "Is Karen around"?

When she looked at me quizzically, I added, "I'm her brother."

She smiled, "What a nice surprise. I'm Karen's mother."

Blamestorming:

Sitting around in a group discussing why a deadline was missed or a project failed and who was responsible.

The store's policy on returns was prominently posted at every register as well as throughout the store. Every receipt also had the same information. A store credit would be given on all returns, but there were no cash refunds. After explaining this policy to the grouchy dowager, the woman blew up at the clerk, finally demanding the name of the President and his address.

The clerk replied George Bush, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC.

The woman promptly wrote this information down and stuffed it into her purse.
"He will hear from me!" she announced as she stormed out of the store.
